In , his father, Geronimo Conegliano a widower, converted himself and his family to Roman Catholicism in order to marry a Catholic woman. Emanuele, as was the custom, took the name of Lorenzo Da Ponte from the Bishop of Ceneda who baptised him. Thanks to the bishop, the three Conegliano brothers studied at the Ceneda seminary; the bishop died in , after which Lorenzo moved to the seminary at Portogruaro , where he took Minor Orders in and became Professor of Literature.
He was ordained a priest in , he began at this period writing poetry in Italian and Latin , including an ode to wine, "Ditirambo sopra gli odori". Although he was a Catholic priest, the young man led a dissolute life. While priest of the church of San Luca , he took a mistress. At his trial, where he was charged with "public concubinage " and "abduction of a respectable woman", it was alleged that he had been living in a brothel and organizing the entertainments there, he was banished for fifteen years from Venice.
In the case of Figaro, Da Ponte included a preface to the libretto that hints at his technique and objectives in libretto writing, as well as his close working with the composer: I have not made a translation, but rather an imitation, or let us say an extract I was compelled to reduce the sixteen original characters to eleven, two of which can be played by a single actor and to omit, in addition to one whole act, many effective scenes In spite, however, of all the zeal and care on the part of both the composer and myself to be brief, the opera will not be one of the shortest Our excuse will be the variety of development of this drama There he rented a three-room apartment for Gulden.
With the death of Austrian Emperor Joseph II in , Da Ponte lost his patron, he was formally dismissed from the Imperial Service in , due to intrigues, receiving no support from the new Emperor, Leopold.
In August , not being able to return to Venice, from which he had been banished until the end of , he set off for Paris via Prague and Dresden armed with a letter of recommendation to Queen Marie Antoinette that her brother, the late Emperor Joseph II, had given Da Ponte before his death. On the road to Paris, on learning about the worsening political situation in France and the arrest of the king and queen, he decided to head for London instead, accompanied by his companion Nancy Grahl.
After a precarious start in England , exercising a number of jobs including that of grocer and Italian teacher, he became librettist at the King's Theatre, London , in , he remained based in London undertaking various theatrical and publishing activities until , when debt and bankruptcy caused him to flee to the United States in with Grahl and their children. He became friends with Clement Clarke Moore , through him, gained an unpaid appointment as the first professor of Italian literature at Columbia College , he was the first Roman Catholic priest to be appointed to the faculty, he was the first to have been raised a Jew.
It is based on the legends of a fictional libertine and seducer, it was premiered by the Prague Italian opera at the National Theater , now called the Estates Theatre , on 29 October Da Ponte's libretto was billed as a dramma giocoso, a common designation of its time that denotes a mixing of serious and comic action. Mozart entered the work into his catalogue as an opera buffa.
Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy and supernatural elements. The opera was commissioned as a result of the overwhelming success of Mozart's trip to Prague in January and February ; the subject matter may have been chosen in consideration of the long history of Don Juan operas in Prague. The libretto of Lorenzo Da Ponte was based on a libretto by Giovanni Bertati for the opera Don Giovanni Tenorio , first performed in Venice early in , although he was loath to admit this in memoirs written decades later. Some of the most important elements that he copied were the idea of opening the drama with the murder of the Commendatore and the lack of a specification of Seville as the setting, customary in the tradition of Don Juan dramas since the appearance of the prototype Don Juan drama El burlador de Sevilla by Tirso de Molina , written in the early 17th century.
For Bertati, the setting was Villena , whereas Da Ponte's libretto only specifies a "city in Spain ". According to some sources, Giacomo Casanova assisted in the writing. Reports about the last-minute completion of the overture conflict. More it was completed the day before, in light of the fact that Mozart recorded the completion of the opera on 28 October; the score calls for double woodwinds , two horns, two trumpets, three trombones, basso continuo for the recitatives, the usual string section.
The composer specified occasional special musical effects. For the ballroom scene at the end of the first act, Mozart calls for two onstage ensembles to play separate dance music in synchronization with the pit orchestra, each of the three groups playing in its own metre, accompanying the dancing of the principal characters. In act 2, Giovanni is seen to play the mandolin , accompanied by pizzicato strings. In the same act, two of the Commendatore's interventions are accompanied by a wind chorale of oboes, clarinets and trombones; the opera was first performed on 29 October in Prague under its full title of Il dissoluto punito ossia il Don Giovanni — Dramma giocoso in due atti.
The work was rapturously received, as was true of Mozart's work in Prague. The Prager Oberpostamtzeitung reported, "Connoisseurs and musicians say that Prague has never heard the like," and "the opera … is difficult to perform. For this production, he wrote two new arias with corresponding recitatives — Don Ottavio's aria "Dalla sua pace", Elvira's aria "In quali eccessi These cuts are seldom performed in theatres or recordings.
The opera's final ensemble was omitted until the early 20th century, a tradition that began early on.
According to the 19th-century Bohemian memoirist Wilhelm Kuhe , the final ensemble was only presented at the first performance in Prague never heard again during the original run.
